About Keragita Farms

A banker-turned-farmer and a coastal agriculture veteran, documenting what it takes to build a data-driven farm from scratch.

The Story Behind Keragita

The name Keragita is derived from ekeragita — ‘tractor’ in the founder’s Ekegusii language — a nod to the machine that first broke the soil. Desmond Momanyi Mariita spent six years in various roles at the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, most recently in the Data Governance Department, then moved to Germany to study Cognitive Systems at the University of Potsdam — machine learning and artificial intelligence. The question became: where does this matter most?

The answer came from six acres in Gongoni Ward. The first season ended with a crop loss that changed the direction of the project — the full account is in the journal. That season made the case for data on the farm.

On the ground, operations are led by Zakaria, an experienced local farmer with deep knowledge of coastal agriculture. Desmond currently provides the capital, data strategy, and technology direction from Germany while Zakaria manages the daily reality of crops, livestock, and weather. The long-term plan is for Desmond to relocate to Kenya once the farm is fully established and profitable. Until then, the model works because the roles are clearly divided: Desmond brings the data thinking; Zakaria brings the farming. Neither works without the other.

Keragita’s vision extends beyond one farm. Starting a farm in Kenya is hard — not because the knowledge doesn’t exist, but because it’s scattered and rarely published with real numbers. The goal is an open record that others can learn from.

Key Milestones

Completed Farming Operations

Land Acquisition

Secured 6 acres of farmland in Gongoni Ward, Magarini Sub-County, Kilifi County. Title deed obtained and verified.

Completed Farming Operations

First Farm Operations

Introduced 5 goats (4 female, 1 male) for manure-based soil building, and planted green grams and maize — beginning active agricultural production.

Completed Farming Operations

First Harvest

Green gram cash crop lost to prolonged rains. Intercropped maize harvested (3 bags) between 29 August and 5 September. The absence of weather monitoring meant no early warning was possible.

Completed Growth & Partnerships

Company Registration

Keragita Farms Ltd officially registered in Kenya, establishing the legal foundation for all farming and commercial operations.

Current Growth & Partnerships

Website Launch

Launch of keragita.com — the public-facing platform featuring the farm journal, impact data, and partner contact system.

Planned Growth & Partnerships

Seeking Partners

Actively seeking technology partners, agricultural organizations, and early-stage funders to support sensor deployment and farm expansion. Personal assets to be transferred to Keragita Farms Ltd.

Planned Technology & Innovation

First Sensor Deployment

Installation of weather station and initial soil moisture sensors for data-driven irrigation and harvest timing decisions.

Follow Our Progress

Our journal documents every season — what we planted, what it cost, what happened, and what we learned. Real data from a real farm.
